A.   Personal Statement

My long-standing research interests fall in the molecular mechanisms of sudden cardiac death and myocardial injury induced by air pollution or drugs. My research has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation in China (NSFC) with two grants, and by the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation with one grant, since 2010. I have published >10 papers in professional, peer-reviewed journals recorded by SCI. I have co-edited three English Science Books.

A full list of my publications (in a total of 20) is enclosed at the end of this document.

1.    Sudden (cardiac) death and FTIR

Myocardial infarction can be a main cause of sudden cardiac death. The gold standard is pathology, but in negative autopsy cases, such as commotion cordis, pathology may not be informative (Forensic Sci 2013, Med Sci Law 2012). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) can detect the molecular constitutents and protein conformations in chronic and acute myocardial infarction (J Huazhong Univ Sci Technolog Med Sci  2010). FTIR may thus become a novel technology used in forensic pathology.

2.    Cardiac injury induced by air pollution

With the flourishing research on air pollution, the association between ambient particulate matter exposure and health burden has expanded to not only the morbidity and mortality of respiratory diseases, but also the cardiovascular diseases, such as stoke, myocardial infarction, hypertension, and cardiac arrhythmia. Even in the case of sudden cardiac death, post short-term ultrafine articles exposure may be associated not only with apoptosis, but also with autophagy, which could be regulated by the mTOR pathway.
