Overview of Shenzhen University Medical School
The bachelor’s program in Clinical Medicine at Shenzhen University (SZU) was approved by the Ministry of Education, and Shenzhen University Medical School was established in December 2008 as the first medical school in Shenzhen. Professor Baoguo Jiang, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, currently serves as Dean of the Medical School. The School has developed nationally recognized strengths in areas including genomic medicine, immunology, cancer research, aging and metabolism, therapeutic lead compound discovery, AI imaging, medical device development, orthopedics, neurosurgery, burn surgery, and pain management.
SZU Medical School comprises nine schools: the School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Biomedical Engineering, School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing, School of Dentistry, School of Public Health, First Clinical Medical School, Xuefu Clinical Medical School, and South China Clinical Medical School. It also includes the Department of Family Medicine, Medical Humanities Center, Carson International Cancer Center, Continuing Medical Education Center, and Medical Innovation and Translation Center. The Medical School has three directly affiliated hospitals and 19 non-directly affiliated teaching hospitals.
The Medical School offers six bachelor’s degree programs: Clinical Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dental Medicine, and Preventive Medicine. It offers four doctoral programs, including three first-level discipline PhD programs (Biomedical Engineering, Biology, and Basic Medical Sciences) and one professional doctorate in Biomedical Engineering. In addition, there are eight master’s programs, including three first-level discipline programs (Biomedical Engineering, Basic Medical Sciences, and Clinical Medicine) and five professional degree programs (Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Medicine, Pharmaceutical Science, Public Health, and Dental Medicine).
SZU Medical School currently enrolls 5,020 full-time students, which include 2,594 undergraduates, 2,176 graduates, 173 Ph.D. students, and 77 international students. The Medical School has a total of 570 faculty members, including 242 full-time teaching and research staff (among them six Chair Professors, 23 Distinguished Professors, and 32 Professors), as well as 137 postdoctoral researchers. Most full-time faculty members have overseas study or work experience, and 97.1% hold doctoral degrees. The faculty includes 28 national-level high-tier talents and 16 provincial-level high-tier talents.
SZU Medical School hosts one national research platform (the National Center for Molecular Drug Innovation), six ministerial-level platforms, five provincial key laboratories, three provincial engineering research centers, and 19 Shenzhen municipal research platforms, including a Nobel Prize laboratory. It also operates one university-level translational research platform.
Between 2021 and 2025, SZU Medical School secured 1,238 vertically funded research projects and 180 horizontally funded projects, with total research funding of approximately RMB 940 million. During this period, the School received 445 grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), including one Basic Science Center Project, two Distinguished Young Scholar Projects, five Excellent Young Scholar Projects, and 28 major key projects. Faculty members published a total of 12,332 SCI-indexed papers, including 1,774 high-quality publications at the level of PNAS or above, with nine papers published in Nature, Science, and Cell, and 278 in their affiliated journals. The Medical School has also been granted 988 patents, including 377 invention patents, 557 utility model patents, five design patents, and 49 international patents.
Clinical Medicine ranks within the top 2‰ of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), while Pharmacology & Toxicology, Biology & Biochemistry, and Agricultural Sciences rank within the top 5‰. Neuroscience & Behavior, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Immunology, and Microbiology rank within the top 1% of ESI disciplines. In the 2024 Shanghai Ranking, Basic Medical Sciences ranked ninth nationally (top 8%). In the TIMES 2025 China Subject Ratings, both Basic Medical Sciences and Biomedical Engineering received an A rating. In the 2025 U.S. News Best Global Universities Rankings, Clinical Medicine ranked 389th globally, entering the world top 500 for the first time and ranking 29th among mainland Chinese universities.
SZU Medical School actively promotes international collaboration and has established partnerships with leading medical schools and research institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Belgium, Kazakhstan, and other countries.
