A. Personal statement
Zhenlin Zhao, Ph.D, is a postdoctoral Scientist at Oxford University, Professor of Surgery, Chief Physician, and Director of the Department of Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University. He is Executive Chairman of the International Organization for Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine, Chief Scientist of Shenzhen Ruipuxun Institute of Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine Research, Co-director and standing committee member of the International Cryotherapy Society (ISC), and standing committee member of the Asian Cryotherapy (ASC). Dr Zhao is also academic leader of provincial colleges and universities, and is an editorial board member of the Journal of Modern Immunology, Journal of Clinical Medicine, and Current Report on Clinical Trial Studies and Outcomes. He is a graduate supervisor at Shenzhen University and Shanxi Medical University.
Dr Zhao’s research directions are in tumor immunity, and his clinical direction is in tumor biotherapy and stem cell regenerative medicine. Dr Zhao was a postdoctoral fellow between 2007 and 2011 in the NDS Surgery Department of Oxford University; at the same period, Dr Zhao majored in pancreatic transplantation and islet cell transplantation at Churchill Hospital, Oxford University. In 2013, Dr Zhao established the first Clinical Department of Stem Cell Regenerative Medicine at The First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University as Director. In the last 5 years, Dr Zhao has led a clinical study program in stem cell therapy in autoimmune diseases, diabetes, ulcerative colitis, ischemic stroke, ALS, cirrhosis, nonunion of fractures, MLD gene therapy, and CAR-T treatment of solid tumors.
In term of the R & D position, Dr Zhao has undertaken a national natural science foundation project, and has jointly undertaken major national science and technology special projects: RPE transplantation for degeneration of retina. Dr Zhao has undertaken three provincial natural science foundation projects, two provincial scientific and technological research projects, one provincial talent fund project, and provincial education–science and a university-level funded project. Dr Zhao has been awarded prizes in two provincial science and technology progress awards and one provincial youth science and technology award.
Dr Zhao has published more than 50 publications in journals, including Microsurgery, the Journal of Experiment Medicine (JEM), the Chinese Journal of Hepatobiliary Surgery, the Chinese Experimental Journal, and the Chinese Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
