A. Personal Statement
My long-standing research interests fall in: 1) To reveal the molecular action mechanism of TCM. In my research, I have found that the underlying mechanisms of a Chinese herbal extract, Fo Shou San, in treating blood and vascular diseases.2) To investigate the P2Y Receptors in regulating cell proliferation, migration and neurogenesis of neuron stem cell. I have found that the P2y1 receptor could regulate the expression of acetylcholinesterase in muscle and neuron cells.

The action mechanism of a TCM decoction Fo Shou San (FSS)
FSS is a Chinese medicinal formula for treating blood deficiency and cardiovascular diseases. Firstly, a systematic approach was developed for the chemical assessment of FSS. FSS was found to possess the ability to induce the red blood cell precursor differentiation. Also, FSS could induce erythropoietin (EPO) gene expression, which was mediated by hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) signaling pathway. We have also found that FSS possessed the ability to relax the rat coronary artery constriction, which was mediated by nitric oxide (NO). Furthermore, we have determined the absorption of ferulic acid of FSS using both in vitro and in vivo assay. For the in vitro assay, ferulic acid of FSS could be easily absorbed in Caco-2 intestinal cell monolayer; for the in vivo assay, the pharmacokinetic parameters showed that the bioavailability of ferulic acid of FSS was much higher than that ferulic acid alone after the oral administration to rats.
