Shenzhen University Medicine Forum: The Unique Fluorine Effect in the Synthesis of Fluorine-Containing Functional Molecules and Applications
On January 3, 2025, Shenzhen University Medical School was honored to host Professor Jinbo Hu from the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC), Chinese Academy of Sciences, for the 128th lecture of the Shenzhen Medical Forum. The event was chaired by Professor Peng Huang from Shenzhen University Medical School.Professor Hu delivered an academic presentation titled "The Unique Fluorine Effect in the Synthesis of Fluorine-Containing Functional Molecules and Their Applications" at Building A7, Shahe Yuan, Lihu Campus, Shenzhen University.
Professor Xingzhi Xu presented Professor Jinbo Hu with the "Shenzhen University Medicine Forum" Honorary Medal on behalf of Shenzhen University Medical School
In his lecture, Professor Hu introduced the research advancements his group has madeover the past decade. He highlighted that naturally occurring fluorine-containing organic compounds are extremely rare on Earth, and nearly all such compounds must be synthesized artificially. As a result, the efficient preparation of organofluorine compounds has become a major focus in synthetic chemistry.
Professor Hu and his colleagues were the first to propose the concept of the “negative fluorine effect” in nucleophilic fluoroalkylation. Building on this discovery, they systematically explored strategies to modulate the negative fluorine effect, leading to the development of several novel fluoroalkylating reagents. Two of these reagents have been widely recognized by international researchers and are referred to as "Hu reagents." Using these reagents, Professor Hu’s group has successfully developed highly efficient fluoroalkylation, fluoroalkenylation, and fluorination reactions, expanding the possibilities of organofluorine chemistry.
Professor Hu's lecture sparked great interest among attendees and was followed by a lively question-and-answer session. We extend our sincere gratitude to Professor Jinbo Hu for his inspiring lecture and insightful discussions, which provided valuable knowledge and inspiration to all in attendance.
