2025 Seminars on Scientific Writing Skills and Molecular Genetics of Human Disease were Held Successfully
From 14 to 17 July 2025, Shenzhen University Medical School hosted its Internationalization Construction Series courses at A7 Shaheyuan, Lihu Campus.
Dr. Jessica Tamanini—former Associate Editor at Nature Publishing UK and now English Science Editor for the Medical School and Dr. Filippo Tamanini—formerly a Senior Teaching Fellow at Imperial College London—led seminars on “Scientific Writing Skills” and “Molecular Genetics and Human Disease,” attended by over 160 students and staff under the chairmanship of Professor Xingzhi Xu, Executive Dean of SZU Medical School, and Professor Takeda Shunichi, Distinguished Professor in the School of Basic Medical Sciences.
Drawing on her extensive academic-editing experience, Dr. Jessica Tamanini guided participants through the full research-publication process: crafting clear and concise writing; polishing manuscripts; designing titles, abstracts, and figures; deciding authorship; selecting appropriate journals; and navigating peer review and submission outcomes. Attendees emerged with practical strategies for effective scientific writing and streamlined publication.
Dr. Filippo Tamanini’s seminars integrated clinical case studies with fundamental research to explore several cutting-edge topics in molecular genetics, including using Fragile X Syndrome as a model for memory and learning mechanisms, the regulation of the circadian clock by PERIOD and CRYPTOCHROME proteins, the interplay between the cell cycle and circadian rhythms, and the genetic drivers of cancer from mutation discovery to functional characterization. This comprehensive overview deepened participants’ understanding of key genetic pathways and established a solid foundation for future disease-focused research.
In follow-up discussions, attendees exchanged insights with both instructors on manuscript preparation and the molecular bases of human disease. The series received enthusiastic feedback and marked a significant step forward in the Medical School’s internationalization efforts.
