Nobel Laureate Professor Barry J. Marshall Wins Intl. Sci-tech Cooperation Award

On June 24, 2024, Nobel laureate Professor Barry J. Marshall was awarded the 2023 China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award in Beijing, with Shenzhen University as the primary cooperative institution. It recognizes his achievements in scientific research and contributions to international cooperation. Prof. Marshall is the first scientist in Shenzhen to receive this honor. On June 25, Prof. Barry J. Marshall, was appointed as Chair Professor of Shenzhen University, at the Lihu Campus of Shenzhen University.

Prof. Marshall expressed his honor in becoming a member of Shenzhen University and looked forward to future work in science education and social services. In the future, he will continue his research in Marshall Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering at the Shenzhen University, focusing on China-Australian scientific and cultural exchanges, gastric cancer prevention and treatment research, and the development of the healthcare industry.

Prof. Yuyang Jiang warmly welcomed Professor Marshall to Shenzhen University. He expressed sincere invitations for foreign experts to cooperate technologically with Shenzhen, anticipating deeper collaborations that could boost Shenzhen's global science influence and accelerate the exchange and application of scientific achievements.

Prof. Xueji Zhang indicated that receiving 2023 China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award not only highly recognizes the scientific achievements of Prof. Marshall personally, but also fully affirms the accomplishments of Prof. Marshall, Shenzhen University, and Shenzhen in international scientific and technological cooperation. The appointment of Prof. Marshall also marks significant progress in the internationalization of the university's talent pool.

After the appointment ceremony, Prof. Marshall delivered a lecture on Precision Medicine: Theory and Practice to staff and students of Shenzhen University and all attendees of the ceremony, introducing the history and latest research findings related to the subject.

Prof. Marshall is the 2005 Nobel Prize Laureate in Physiology or Medicine. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (as a foreign member), the Australian Academy of Science, the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, and the honorary president of the Australia China Friendship Society of Western Australia.

In 2017, Prof. Marshall became a visiting professor at Shenzhen University, commencing his close cooperation with Shenzhen and the university. In 2019, the Marshall Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering was established at Shenzhen University, with Prof. Marshall serving as director. The Marshall lab mainly focuses on pathogenesis of gastrointestinal tumors, multi-source information for accurate diagnosis, and personalized precision treatment research. For many years, Prof. Marshall has maintained close ties with Shenzhen, actively facilitating cooperation between scientific research institutions in Shenzhen and other organizations in China, as well as international collaborations with the University of Western Australia.
