Exploring new opportunities for educational and research collaboration along the "Belt and Road" Event on the Internationalization of Medical Education and Research held at Shenzhen University
On October 21, the Event on the Internationalization of Medical Education and Research was successfully held at Shenzhen University (SZU). Leaders from seven universities and research institutions in Central Asia attended the event, including Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Kazakh National Medical University, Khazar University in Azerbaijan, West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov Medical University, Samarkand State Medical University in Uzbekistan, and Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan. Additionally, leaders and medical experts from prominent Chinese medical institutions, such as Shenzhen University, China Medical University, Capital Medical University, Harbin Medical University, Ningbo University, Chongqing Medical University, Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine, and Southern University of Science and Technology - King's College London School of Medicine, gathered to discuss new opportunities for educational and research collaboration under the "Belt and Road" Initiative. Among the notable attendees were Zhou Hui, Vice President of SZU; Jiang Baoguo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of SZU General Hospital, and Dean of SZU Medical School; and Ji Xunming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Vice President of Capital Medical University (who attended online).
The event featured a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Shenzhen-Almaty Joint Laboratory for Frontiers of Medical Science (salFMS). During a ceremonial unveiling attended by all participants, Zhou Hui and other leaders from Chinese institutions, along with Zhanseit Tuimebayev and other leaders from Central Asian institutions, officially launched the joint laboratory. Xu Xingzhi, Executive Director of the Medical School at SZU, shared insights into the laboratory's establishment. Following a previously signed cooperation agreement, the joint laboratory will establish branches in both Shenzhen and Almaty, each managing its own operations. The laboratory aims to facilitate exchange and collaboration among graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and young scientists. It will also offer young scientists a three-month hands-on course in medical science. Additionally, the laboratory will promote collaborative scientific research publications based on shared interests and foster academic partnerships, including joint conferences on medical advancements. The first project underway is a significant initiative titled "Design of New Multi-Target Drug Candidates Based on Plant Raw Materials," which has received personal endorsement from Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
With a strong focus on international development, SZU has established partnerships with 290 universities and institutions across 55 countries and regions. The university engages in various collaborative efforts, including student and faculty exchanges, research partnerships, and joint educational programs. Additionally, it actively recruits international students to foster a global academic environment, thereby enhancing the quality and level of its international exchanges. The Medical School at SZU has laid a solid foundation for collaboration with universities in Central Asia, successfully hosting two International Summer School programs and various academic exchange initiatives for young faculty, undergraduates, and doctoral students.
